The adrenals are the major steroid factories of the body producing or contributing to the production of about 150 vital hormones essential to your body's health and energy production.

According to Dr. Wilson, "The hormones secreted by your adrenals influence all of the major physiological processes in your body. They closely affect the utilization of carbohydrates and fats, the conversion of fats and proteins into energy, the distribution of stored fat (especially around your waist and at the sides of your face), normal blood sugar regulation, and proper cardiovascular and gastrointestinal function." Healthy adrenal glands secrete very precise amounts of steroid hormones. The secretion of these hormones helps minimize negative and allergic reactions to drugs, alcohol, food and environmental allergens. But because the adrenals are so responsive to any change in your inner physical, emotional and psychological environment, it's easy for them to get out of balance. "This means that too much physical, emotional, environmental and/or psychological stress can deplete your adrenals, causing a decrease in the output of adrenal hormones, particularly cortisol," says Wilson. This decrease results in adrenal fatigue or hypoadrenia (hypo meaning lower and adrenia meaning related to the adrenals).

In addition, Wilson says that if your adrenal glands have no opportunity to fully recover from chronic or simultaneously occurring stresses, usually the result is adrenal fatigue.

What is adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is any decrease in the ability of the adrenal glands to carry out their normal functions. This happens when your body is overwhelmed, when stress overextends the capacity of your body to compensate and recover. Consequently, the adrenals become fatigued and are unable to continue responding adequately to further stress.

Typically what happens to many people is that they get into a vicious cycle of relying on coffee, colas and other stimulants to keep them going throughout the day. Eventually, they get a second wind and end up working very late into the night. It becomes harder and harder for them to get going in the morning, so they drink more caffeine, perpetuating the cycle.

But that's only the beginning. Adrenal fatigue manifests as a collection of signs and symptoms, known as a "syndrome." Its chief symptom is fatigue, but once the adrenal buffer is gone, you become susceptible to a long list of health complaints including respiratory infections, asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and other immune disorders.

Adrenal fatigue shows up in a variety of ways


The rarest and most extreme form is called Addison's disease, named for Sir Thomas Addison, who first described it in 1855. It is life threatening if untreated and can result in permanent damage to the adrenal glands. Addison's disease affects four out of 100,000 people. About 70% of all cases are the result of auto-immune disease, while the other 30% result from a variety of causes, including severe stress.

The more common form of adrenal fatigue has been called by a number of names including non-Addison's hypadrenia, sub-clinical hypoadrenia, neurasthenia, adrenal neurasthenia, and adrenal apathy. "It is not a readily identifiable entity like measles or a growth on the end of your finger," says Dr. Wilson. "People with adrenal fatigue often look and act relatively normal. They may not have any obvious signs of physical illness, yet they are not well and live with a general sense of unwellness or 'gray' feelings." Anyone, from birth to old age and from any race or culture, can suffer from adrenal fatigue. People vary greatly in their ability to respond to and withstand stress. Foods that feed your adrenals

If you find yourself craving it, do yourself a favor and supplement your diet with 400 mg. of magnesium citrate instead.

Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils (found in vegetable shortening, margarine and commercial peanut butters) use up the enzymes your body normally uses to metabolize the good fats and oils that help form cell membranes and nerve sheaths. Deep fried foods produce a double whammy: you get the problems associated with eating unhealthy fats (see above) and plus the ingestion of free radicals which are produced when oils break down the heat.

The Cheating, lying, Vile, Zombie was wired!

George W. Bush tried to laugh off the bulge. "I don't know what that is," he said on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, referring to the infamous protrusion beneath his jacket during the presidential debates. "I'm embarrassed to say it's a poorly tailored shirt."

Dr. Robert M. Nelson, however, was not laughing. He knew the president was not telling the truth. And Nelson is neither conspiracy theorist nor midnight blogger. He's a senior research scientist for NASA and for Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and an international authority on image analysis. Currently he's engrossed in analyzing digital photos of Saturn's moon Titan, determining its shape, whether it contains craters or canyons.

For the past week, while at home, using his own computers, and off the clock at Caltech and NASA, Nelson has been analyzing images of the president's back during the debates. A professional physicist and photo analyst for more than 30 years, he speaks earnestly and thoughtfully about his subject. "I am willing to stake my scientific reputation to the statement that Bush was wearing something under his jacket during the debate," he says. "This is not about a bad suit. And there's no way the bulge can be described as a wrinkled shirt."

Nelson and a scientific colleague produced the photos from a videotape, recorded by the colleague, who has chosen to remain anonymous, of the first debate. The images provide the most vivid details yet of the bulge beneath the president's suit. Amateurs have certainly had their turn at examining the bulge, but no professional with a résumé as impressive as Nelson's has ventured into public with an informed opinion. In fact, no one to date has enhanced photos of Bush's jacket to this degree of precision, and revealed what appears to be some kind of mechanical device with a wire snaking up the president's shoulder toward his neck and down his back to his waist.

Nelson stresses that he's not certain what lies beneath the president's jacket. He offers, though, "that it could be some type of electronic device -- it's consistent with the appearance of an electronic device worn in that manner." The image of lines coursing up and down the president's back, Nelson adds, is "consistent with a wire or a tube."

Nelson used the computer software program Photoshop to enhance the texture in Bush's jacket. The process in no way alters the image but sharpens its edges and accents the creases and wrinkles. You've seen the process performed a hundred times on "CSI": pixelated images are magnified to reveal a clear definition of their shape.

Bruce Hapke, professor emeritus of planetary science in the department of geology and planetary science at the University of Pittsburgh, reviewed the Bush images employed by Nelson, whom he calls "a very highly respected scientist in his field." Hapke says Nelson's process of analyzing the images are the "exact same methods we use to analyze images taken by spacecraft of planetary surfaces. It does not introduce any artifacts into the picture in any way."

How can Nelson be certain there's some kind of mechanical device beneath Bush's jacket? It's all about light and shadows, he says. The angles at which the light in the studio hit Bush's jacket expose contours that fit no one's picture of human anatomy and wrinkled shirts. And Nelson compared the images to anatomy texts. He also experimented with wrinkling shirts in various configurations, wore them under his jacket under his bathroom light, and couldn't produce anything close to the Bush bulge.

In the enhanced photo of the first debate, Nelson says, look at the horizontal white line in middle of the president's back. You'll see a shadow. "That's telling me there's definitely a bulge," he says. "In fact, it's how we measure the depths of the craters on the moon or on Mars. We look at the angle of the light and the length of shadow they leave. In this case, that's clearly a crater that's under the horizontal line -- it's clearly a rim of a bulge protruding upward, one due to forces pushing it up from beneath."

Hapke, too, agrees that the bulge is neither anatomy nor a wrinkled shirt. "I would think it's very hard to avoid the conclusion that there's something underneath his jacket," he says. "It would certainly be consistent with some kind of radio receiver and a wire."

Nelson admits that he's a Democrat and plans to vote for John Kerry. But he takes umbrage at being accused of partisanship. "Everyone wants to think my colleague and I are just a bunch of dope-crazed ravaged Democrats who are looking to insult the president at the last minute," he says. "And that's not what this is about. This is scientific analysis. If the bulge were on Bill Clinton's back and he was lying about it, I'd have to say the same thing."

"Look, he says, "I'm putting myself at risk for exposing this. But this is too important. It's not about my reputation. If they force me into an early retirement, it'll be worth it if the public knows about this. It's outrageous statements that I read that the president is wearing nothing under there.
There's clearly something there."

To Believe or Not to Believe that is the question.

Believe is one of many words used in our language that can easily mislead and misrepresent the user's intent. This can be attributed to its' denotative and subjective subtleties. It seems "believe" is the catch all verb of choice.

believe (verb) 1. to accept as true or as speaking truth. [synonyms: -be certain of -put one's faith in] 2. think; suppose. [synonyms: assume, maintain, presume] to believe in 1. have faith in the existence of. [synonyms: swear by; trust in; have faith in ] 2. feel sure of the worth of.

belief (noun) 1. firm opinion; acceptance "that is my belief" 2. religious conviction "he has no belief" 3. belief in: trust or confidence "belief in the justice system" [1]

How we use the word
There are two circumstances in which to use the word "believe"; the religious and the rational. By religious, I mean a fundamentalistic zealous attitude towards the belief. In the religious viewpoint, the act of believing is to accept as true or real without need of additional confirmation or proof. We often think this only applies to religious situations but it can apply to any domain. There is a problem with this attitude; it does not allow for change or growth. The person who uses this standpoint already accepts the belief as FACT.

The rational version of the verb "to believe" allows for change because its acceptance of truth is based on assumption and conjecture. This standpoint allows for mistakes and as humans, we have the capacity to learn from our mistakes. The following scenario is over simplified but it goes something like this:

What is the Earth's shape?


The religious believer—"I believe the earth is flat." I know this to be true and nothing you are going to say will change my mind because I am right.

The rational believer— "I believe the earth is flat." I presume this is so, because when I walk I appear to go in a straight line.

Note: With the rational outlook, the presumption can be tested and tried until it has mutated into fact or knowledge with evidence to support it.

— and the answer today?
The standard response is: “the earth is round”, but to be more precise, it is really an oblong spheroid.

How we believe
Humans are pattern seeking creatures. This skill, of being able to establish patterns and causal relationships, seems to be inherent in our nature and is attributed our survival instinct. Patterns are ascertained through experience. The problem is knowing which pattern is beneficial, harmful or useless. We learn what works and doesn't work through repetitive experiences.

For example: Early humans learned the pattern of the seasons and eventually developed agriculture.

Natures' patterns can be observed and learned but what of the abstract concepts like magic, religion and god.
—How did we begin to (religiously) believe in what we couldn't see? Below are a few possible theories of the origins of spiritual belief:

Humans are born with the inherent capacity to believe in mystical concepts Early man manifested the "abstract" for those situations where there were no patterns to establish reason; a kind of Proto-science if you will. Mysticism is a false paradigm that our ancestors accepted as truth and is now slowly de-evolving through the expansion of scientific knowledge.
Earth was visited by an advanced culture in ancient times and early man developed the divine concept. —Not my most favored theory, I must admit. Why we believe
Each person will have their own reason for believing or not believing in something; be it from the religious or rational viewpoint. When it comes to religious spiritual beliefs it could be for any number of reasons. In the following list, god is used generically to reflect all possibilities and is not gender or denomination specific:


Believing in god answers the need to believe in something.
An individual believes in god because they were taught to believe.
God must exist because there exists a living universe.
God gives life meaning and purpose; by helping define our sense of self.
God provides control and guidance in life through fear of retribution. Depending on the belief this can be in the present, in the afterlife,
reincarnation or karma.
There has to be more to life than 'life and death'.
What we believe

I cannot answer for anyone else. ~For myself, I find patterns and rituals comforting and meaningful. I know that I need more than just
rationalization to explain my world. For some it is science, for others it's religion but for me --the answer lies somewhere in between.

Something to think about

Given the assumptions:
(a) There appears to be a hierarchical order within nature.
(b) Awareness may or may not exist between levels.

Questions:
Is there hierarchical level above man?
Would you call "it" god?

Is it something we, as humans, can define?
Does it care about the lower levels within the hierarchy?
Should it be revered?

Will science meet all the needs of humans beyond the realm of logic?

Now that we're all completely fried and bitter and media punch-drunk, it's time to act

So here we are, staring down a rather historic moment amidst the sputtering ideological orgy that is the American experiment and if you're paying any sort of attention at all you're doubtlessly drunk on election hype and saturated with Bush/Kerry platitudes and you wish a white-hot death upon every screeching TV pundit who is right now analyzing yet another insidious national poll that seems to reveal everything and nothing at the exact same time.

And Bush is out there right this very second stumping and sweating and blinking fast and defending his useless hideous little war and hurling snide little invectives and completely fabricated exaggerations at John Kerry, and Kerry is returning the favor by casually mentioning how Bush has ruined the goddamn nation and decimated our self-respect and run roughshod over our international relations all while raping the environment like no president in history and racking up a world-record deficit and mangling the language like a child on too much Ritalin.

It has been, in short, the longest and most painful episode of "American Idol" ever, wherein the two finalists have belted every cheesy American standard and regurgitated every lame disco-era stage move and hit every warbly high note and sacrificed every shred of dignity and integrity and true individuality they might've once possessed, all in the desperate hope that you are finally sufficiently numbed to where you are finally ready press the right 800 number on your AT&T wireless service and place your stupefied vote.

We are almost there. We are so very on the cusp. This is where it all comes down to your intuition and your intelligence and a sheer force of will, your ability to overcome the media-induced nausea and deeply inbred American political ennui and hoist yourself out of this election stupor and go to your polling place and punch the little card or push the little button, and then pray you don't live in a state where the GOP has rigged the touch screens or shredded all the Democratic voter registrations as you think, wow, world's foremost democracy and yet why does it feel like I'm voting in, like, Yugoslavia? Why does it feel that this election is so incredibly messy and loaded and rife with snakes and spit and hissing corruption? Weird. Sad. Telling.

It has become surreal, this election. It has become beyond coherent. We are at a point where our election system has become suspect and deeply flawed and our ideology has come unraveled and we as a nation no longer fully understand our role in the world and the bloom is way, way off the patriotic rose, so much so that it's no longer just a matter of which candidate will put a shinier coat of paint on the massive ship of bureaucracy, but who will stop us from sinking too abruptly into the quicksand of abuse and arrogance and ever increasing irrelevance. Go, U-S-A!

So then. As we stare down this uncanny and indelible moment in American history, there are two angles of approach. One: sit back and reflect on how the hell we got here, what bizarre machinations and demonic falling dominos managed to put BushCo in power, just what sort of humiliating and positively satanic chain reaction lo these past 50 years led up to where we are now, to this bitter yet oddly amusing spectacle of a massive and awe-inspiring empire in full crumble.

This approach, it is the more depressing and fatalistic and painful of the two and will result in much sighing and the supping of wine and the licking of lovers to deflect the pain and energize the skin and try and put it all in perspective, and is recommended only in small doses. Except for the drinking and licking part.

Conversely and perhaps more enjoyably, you can project forward, then reminisce. You can, that is to say, imagine it's a short 20 years hence and it's about 2024 and we're sitting there sipping our laudanum/Vicodin Colas and injecting Nexium straight into our eyeballs and watching our 10-foot plasma-TV walls and looking back and saying my god, 2004, that was a weird one, wasn't it?

Remember that ugly time? Remember when that smirking dolt Bush Jr. was president and we went through that dark dank tunnel of spiritual dread and international humiliation and we bombed Iraq for no reason and killed all those people for no reason and gutted our own economy for no reason other than to line the pockets of the Bush WASP mafia's corporate cronies? Wasn't that just so, like, crazy?

We will make jokes and shake our heads and sigh. We will say oh man remember that defense guy? Rumsfeld? Remember his black and ominous eyes? His savage abuse of power and complete lack of accountability? Remember that demon-god Ashcroft and his oiled feet, didn't dance and didn't smoke and didn't drink and didn't have sex and wanted to crack down on nipples and scan our e-mail and check our library books and tap our phones? Remember Condi Rice, that lost and desperate look, lonely and sad and a creepy veneer of doomed longing over her soul? Weird times, my friend. Sip.

We know that 20 years hence, there will be no Reagan-like legacy for Shrub. There will be no renamed airports or honorary expressways or revisionist rose-colored history books arguing the good and the bad of his epic much-loved presidency, because there is so little good and so very, very much bad and there is absolutely no love anywhere.

We already know that history will look very, very unkindly upon this most booblike, lie-torn, appallingly underqualified of American presidents. Of this we can rest assured. Of this we will only look back and be incredibly grateful it didn't last all that long.

This angle, it is the moderately healing and perspective-adjusting one. It's comfortable and helpful to project in such a manner, especially given how it's almost too hot right now, just too frustrating and painful to remain in this moment, to sit here and wait for the election returns and the potential lawsuits and Supreme Court riggings all the while knowing the GOP is trying everything short of launching another terrorist attack to maintain power and will stop at almost nothing to instill fear and dread and Dick Cheney deeper into the numb American psyche.

You cannot stay here. You cannot sit in this moment any longer. You simply have to get out and vote and scream and then roll up this ugly hunk of living history into a tight little ball of hot gelatinous goo and hurl it at the wall of time and see what sticks.

This is my recommendation. That and the wine thing. And voting. Voting is mandatory. Do it. Do it so you have something to talk about in 20 years. So you can say you were there and you participated and you tried like hell to change history. Because of course, you can.
